    A series of balloon-flight experiments at altitudes greater than 115,000 feet were conducted to gain information relative to the use of composite shields (passive and/or active) for shielding large-volume, lithium-drifted, germanium (Ge(Li)) detectors used in gamma-ray spectrometers.     Limbah cair hasil industri tahu mengandung Biologycal Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), dan Total Suspended Solid (TSS) yang cukup tinggi. Jika limbah cair dibuang begitu saja akan menimbulkan masalah lingkungan yang kompleks. Salah satu alternatif solusi yang dinilai efektif untuk mengatasi permasalahan ini adalah fitoremediasi tanaman eceng gondok. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas sistem pengolahan limbah cair industri tahu menggunakan fitoremediasi tanaman eceng gondok serta mengetahui perbandingan biaya pengolahan limbah cair industri tahu menggunakan fitoremediasi dengan tanaman eceng gondok jika dibandingkan dengan metode konvensional (biofilter aerob-anaerob). Jenis penelitian ini adalah eksperimen-komparatif yang terdiri dari dua proses, yakni fitoremediasi dan komparasi data. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Laboratorium Sumber Daya Air, Fakultas Teknologi Industri Pertanian, Universitas Padjadjaran untuk fitoremediasi sedangkan untuk pengujian hasil penelitian, masing-masing sampel diuji di Laboratorium Ekologi Pulik Universitas Padjadjaran Bandung. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada Februari hingga Maret 2021. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa eceng gondok dapat menurunkan kadar TSS, BOD, dan COD secara umum di atas 80%. Selain dari segi efektivitas, dari segi biaya, pengolahan limbah cair industri tahu dengan metode fitoremediasi lebih efektif daripada metode konvensional (biofilter aerob-anaerob). Hal ini dibuktikan dengan nilai Eco-Efficiency Ratio (EER) metode konvensional sebesar 78,48% dan metode fitoremediasi sebesar 87,03%

When liquid water contents sufficiently high to cause wet growth are achieved, the charge transfer falls to values which are insignificant to thunderstorm electrification.     A new ghost cell/level set method for moving boundary problems:application to tumor growth

    In this paper, we present a ghost cell/level set method for the evolution of interfaces whose normal velocity depend upon the solutions of linear and nonlinear quasi-steady reaction-diffusion equations with curvature-dependent boundary conditions. Our technique includes a ghost cell method that accurately discretizes normal derivative jump boundary conditions without smearing jumps in the tangential derivative; a new iterative method for solving linear and nonlinear quasi-steady reaction-diffusion equations; an adaptive discretization to compute the curvature and normal vectors; and a new discrete approximation to the Heaviside function. We present numerical examples that demonstrate better than 1.5-order convergence for problems where traditional ghost cell methods either fail to converge or attain at best sub-linear accuracy. We apply our techniques to a model of tumor growth in complex, heterogeneous tissues that consists of a nonlinear nutrient equation and a pressure equation with geometry-dependent jump boundary conditions. We simulate the growth of glioblastoma (an aggressive brain tumor) into a large, 1 cm square of brain tissue that includes heterogeneous nutrient delivery and varied biomechanical characteristics (white matter, gray matter, cerebrospinal fluid, and bone), and we observe growth morphologies that are highly dependent upon the variations of the tissue characteristics—an effect observed in real tumor growth

    Direct neutron capture of 48Ca at kT = 52 keV

    The neutron capture cross section of 48Ca was measured relative to the known gold cross section at kT = 52 keV using the fast cyclic activation technique. The experiment was performed at the Van-de-Graaff accelerator, Universitaet Tuebingen. The new experimental result is in good agreement with a calculation using the direct capture model. The 1/v behaviour of the capture cross section at thermonuclear energies is confirmed, and the adopted reaction rate which is based on several previous experimental investigations remains unchanged.Comment: 9 pages (uses Revtex), 2 postscript figures, accepted for publication as Brief Report in Phys.     In Situ Contaminated Sediments Project – Work Package 1A Report

    Project aims Defra is seeking to understand the magnitude of risks (e.g. to aquatic ecology and human health) or impacts (e.g. on the way that water bodies are managed) posed by contaminated sediment in England, as part of its work towards meeting its environmental objectives. In the context of this project, in-situ contaminated sediment is defined as: Chemically contaminated sediment within the water column, bed, banks and floodplain of a surface water body that has been transported alongside the normal sediment load and deposited by fluvial or coastal processes. This project considers the risk posed by non-agricultural diffuse pollution sources in England that result in the contamination of in-situ sediments (for example, contamination from toxic metals, hydrocarbons and surfactants). The scope encompasses both freshwater and marine sediments in England and extends to one nautical mile off-shore (the seaward limit of coastal waters under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in England). Previous national strategies, including the 2007 Defra UK Strategy for Managing Contaminated Marine Sediments (CDMS), focussed on characterising the risks associated with contaminated sediments in the marine environment. However, while extensive research has been carried out in many locations (including as part of WFD implementation studies) and for particular sources of contamination (e.g. historical metal mining; Environment Agency, 2008) there has not been a comprehensive overview of sediment contamination on a national scale. This project seeks to build on the existing evidence base, drawing together information on the freshwater environment to complement that already gathered for marine waters. This project’s overall aim is to provide a sound evidence base on the contamination of in-situ sediments, which can underpin the development of tools and methods that will help Defra, the Environment Agency and other bodies engaged in regulation and protection of water quality

    The s Process: Nuclear Physics, Stellar Models, Observations

    Nucleosynthesis in the s process takes place in the He burning layers of low mass AGB stars and during the He and C burning phases of massive stars. The s process contributes about half of the element abundances between Cu and Bi in solar system material. Depending on stellar mass and metallicity the resulting s-abundance patterns exhibit characteristic features, which provide comprehensive information for our understanding of the stellar life cycle and for the chemical evolution of galaxies. The rapidly growing body of detailed abundance observations, in particular for AGB and post-AGB stars, for objects in binary systems, and for the very faint metal-poor population represents exciting challenges and constraints for stellar model calculations. Based on updated and improved nuclear physics data for the s-process reaction network, current models are aiming at ab initio solution for the stellar physics related to convection and mixing processes. Progress in the intimately related areas of observations, nuclear and atomic physics, and stellar modeling is reviewed and the corresponding interplay is illustrated by the general abundance patterns of the elements beyond iron and by the effect of sensitive branching points along the s-process path.     Measuring the quantum efficiency of single radiating dipoles using a scanning mirror

    Using scanning probe techniques, we show the controlled manipulation of the radiation from single dipoles. In one experiment we study the modification of the fluorescence lifetime of a single molecular dipole in front of a movable silver mirror. A second experiment demonstrates the changing plasmon spectrum of a gold nanoparticle in front of a dielectric mirror. Comparison of our data with theoretical models allows determination of the quantum efficiency of each radiating dipole.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
